How to change a water pump on a 1969 33 HP Johnsom Outboard?

don't worry the '69 33hp is mechanical shift, not electric.

There's a cover plate on the port side of the exhaust housing, near the bottom, held on by 2 screws. Take that off to access the shift rod connector. Disconnect the lower shift rod from the upper.

6 bolts hold the gearcase to the exhaust housing, take those out %26amp; pull the lower unit off. There's an o-ring on the drive near the splines -- that needs to be on there.

3 hex-head screws hold the pump housing in place. Pull it off over the drive shaft. Slide the impeller drive pin out %26amp; remove the impeller.

Remove the impeller base plate. If the housing %26amp; base aren't scratched or scored they can be reused.

Slide the new base plate over the drive shaft, followed by the new impeller. Insert the drive pin through the impeller %26amp; drive shaft.

Smear a dab of your trailer axle grease inside the housing, and slide the housing down over the impeller.

Using only your hand, turn the drive shaft clockwise while pushing housing down over the impeller. Don't use any kind of tool on the drive shaft splines.

Use molly lube on the driveshaft splines.

Use 3m #847 on the joint between lower unit and exhaust housing (permatex #2 is okay, just messier to apply %26amp; harder to clean off there next time).

Use OMC gasket sealant (or some kind of anti-sieze) on the threads of all the retaining bolts or else corrosion will freeze 'em in place.
How to change a water pump on a 1969 33 HP Johnsom Outboard?
I had a 1970 40HP, the water pump change was similar to newer outboards, drop the lower unit, replace the impeller and wear plate, and the housing if its damaged. Be careful of the wires coming down for the shift control if its electric shift, don't just yank the the lower unit off. A repair manual will give you more detail, its been a while since i changed it.

  • Changed my water pump now what? 95 JEEP WRANGLER 2.5L 4 CYL?

Ok, i got the water pump changed and working find, i also replaced my thermostat, but i relized later that day and on the past couple colder days that i have no heat, my 2.5 L 95 Jeep Wrangler does not over heat and seems to be running fine except for the lack of heat. What could be wrong?
Changed my water pump now what? 95 JEEP WRANGLER 2.5L 4 CYL?
check the operation of the heater valve to see if it moves open. maybe has a broken cable or such. basically make sure hot coolant is moving in and out of the heater core.
Changed my water pump now what? 95 JEEP WRANGLER 2.5L 4 CYL?
There are several things that could be wrong. Is it blowing at all? Is it working on all speeds and just blows cold air? Need a little more info please.
What your describing could simply be low coolant. When you refilled your coolant after changing the pump did you let the engine run until warmed up and continue to add coolant?

First, if you don't have the manual, it's worth it to get one. Try a public library first.

I don't have a manual in front of me, so did a quick google search. Here's an answer that could help. But it calls for an impact wrench that delivers 400lbs of torque. Forget that; use a pulley puller, which you can get for $20 or rent.

How do i change a water pump on a 1996 buick skylark?

Two ways to approach the problem:

    1. go get your self a Manuel that shows you step by step maybe at the Library ! Or

    2. go to the auto parts store buy a replacement and take it

home and study it....then open the hood and study the car...if you have what it takes it will all be fairly clear as you take things out of your way!

Now, the garage says on further inquiry taht its the water pump that has gone. they recommend changing both?

they explains that water pump has goen causing the leackage of coolant. That needs to be changed and as the cam belt is over due they ecommend it to change on the same go. they asking for 拢420
Now, the garage says on further inquiry taht its the water pump that has gone. they recommend changing both?
The logic to doing both at the same time is that many of the same parts have to be removed to do both jobs. So as long as they have the engine apart to replace the pump it would be easier to go ahead and replace the belt at the same time. Doing them together will save you labor money. Also if you let that belt go and it breaks it can in some cases do a lot of damage to the engine. They repair bill would be more like $3000.00 if that were to happen.
Now, the garage says on further inquiry taht its the water pump that has gone. they recommend changing both?
its common for waterpumps to leak ..you cant repair them ..they must be changed ...you do not maintain your car very well ...if you did then the cambelt would have been changed before ...unfortunately you forgot to tell us what make the car is ...拢420 is not a rip-off

I changed water pump out on my 2006 Mercury 150 Optimax, Can't get foot and driveshaft to engage. Any suggest?

Unless you disassembled the %26quot;foot%26quot;, the driveshaft will still be in the gearcase. To install the gearcase, make sure both the gearcase and the shifter are in FWD. Tilt the engine up as high as it will go, slide the drive shaft up the midsection until it contacts the crankshaft. Then turn the propeller slightly to line up the splines on the driveshaft with the crankshaft.

reach up and give the flywheel a clockwise nudge to mesh the splines.

There is not enough room here to type in all the instructions.

Your best bet is to look for a shop manual for your car. It

is not a very difficult job. A shop manual will have pictures

My dodge intrepid is overheating i have changed water-pump and thermostat what could be wrong?

if i open the bleeder valve all that come out is air
My dodge intrepid is overheating i have changed water-pump and thermostat what could be wrong?
Then you have air in the system. With the engine off and cool, open the bleeder valve. Fill the radiator till the coolant starts running out of the bleeder. Then close the bleeder and top off the radiator and reservoir.
My dodge intrepid is overheating i have changed water-pump and thermostat what could be wrong?
That is just that. You have air trapped in the line. Open the bleeder valve until all that comes out is water. You need to bleed out the air.
maybe the cooling system needs flushing.
If bleeding doesn't help then you may have a restricted radiator/heater core, defective thermostat, or head gasket starting to fail. And if you have a electric fan do you hear it coming on? That too can cause overheating if it's not working. Good luck and hope this helps.

Is it easy to change a water pump in a TH mitsubishi Magna 99' executive?

Dead easy if it's a 4 cylinder 'cos the W/P is driven by the rear of the camshaft via a small belt.

It's very hard if it's a V6 and you need to replace both timing belts (Drive and Balance shaft) at the same time as the W/P and the bearings in the belt tensioners should be changed too.
Is it easy to change a water pump in a TH mitsubishi Magna 99' executive?
Depends...If you know what youre doing, it could take a few hours, not bad. If you dont, it will be a nightmare. Its not easy, as the engine compartment is already cramped, and the water pump isnt exactly in a convenient easy-to-access location. Changing the water pump on any vehicle is no fun...unless money is involved.

How tough is it and how long should it take to change a water pump on a 1993 grand cherokee with a v8 318 moto?

Your gonna need a wrench big enough wrench to get the fan off. Do that first with the belt still on. If you can get that off the rest will be pretty easy. you will also need a water pump by pass hose you can't see it now. But you will when you get it apart and if you don't replace it when you do the water pump youll be sorry.

do yourself a favor if your going to do this yourself Get a book at your local auto parts while your getting the water pump. You are looking at about 4 hours if you know what your doing this is with air tools. Doing it by hand 5 to 6 hours.
buy a new one and then open hood you wil lsee what you need to remove to get it off not really a hard job just clean th eold gasket off and really four hours or so would do it between beer breaks might want to add a couple hours more

Will a bad water pump cause my car to turn off?

My car was smoking and leaking and then it started to turn off on me.Will a bad water pump make the car do this??? It's 96 jeep cherokee

The mechanic already changed the water pump and it runs fine again. But im just wondering it that's what caused my car to be turning off??
Will a bad water pump cause my car to turn off?
Possibly yes. The overheating caused the engine to seize up and turn off.
Will a bad water pump cause my car to turn off?
It will make your car overheat and if it gets too hot it will crack the engine block.
    yeeees
Yes it will If you run your car out of water it could lock down your motor down
you know that little gauge that has a fuel pump on it... well it has to be above the E in order for your car to run.
You need to stop driving it and get it to a different garage ASAP. It may be the water pump and you could destroy your engine. If it is the other garage that replaced it needs to be reported. If you are asking if the mechanic did the right thing and it is no longer leaking or over heating you are lucky you didn't ruin your engine. You got out of it cheap.
if it got hot enough it would cause it to shut down on you, that will do it every time,if you got it to hot you may have problems from it later on,hopefully you wont though, good luck.
yes it will, it can cause that in two ways

1- if the water pump pulley get stuck that would cause the belt to brake and that will cause your alternator to stop working then we will only be using your battery and after that the car will die

2- the car over heat to a degree that the eng will shut down the computer to protect it.
I would say you have another problem. The water pump just pumps the water through the engine to keep it cool. In a 96 model cherokee I would assume you have the 4.0l V6. I would check the engine control module for damage. If you remove the module you can test it at autozone or some other parts center for free.
im actually having a similar problem but it seemed to have start with the battery, turns out I need a new alternator but now I noticed that steam is coming from the back of the motor and the water is leaking pretty bad but it's clear water. My car has stopped 2 times in 2 days so im wondering if the water is leaking because my alternator is bad.

You need to be more specific on what your problem is. First water pumps circulate coolant and water through the motor. It has nothing to do with air or fumes. If you give me a more accurate description I might be able to help.

How do you change water pump on a 1993 cadillac deville?

Start by washing the front of the motor with Gunk Engine Brite( http://www.gunk.com/ ) and disconnecting the battery. Drain the radiator. Remove four hoses. Unbolt power-steering pump and fasten it off to the side with a piece of wire. Loosen up the alternator, remove one bolt and pull it aside. Remove the belts. Remove the waterpump. Use 6-point sockets because if you strip a bolthead u r ff'd. Scrape the gasket surface on the engine clean with a square razor blade and scrub it shiny with scotch-brite. Slide the two longest bolts into the new pump and test-fit it. Apply gasket cement to both sides of gasket and according to directions for the type u r using and hang it on the bolts. Bolt it up carefull not to touch the gasket to anything. Snug all the bolts first, then tighten. Reassemble the whole thing. Check and adjust the belt tension. Fill it up and check for leaks. Run it and check for leaks. Run it for 15 mins and check for leaks again.

    Good luck.

    i believe it's a non-interface engine
How diffifcult/expensive would it be to change the water pump on a 1990 toyota celica?
$200-300, because you pretty much change the timing belt at the same time.
How diffifcult/expensive would it be to change the water pump on a 1990 toyota celica?
depends if its got 1.6l motor its a external pump which is easier than the 2.0l or 2.2l which is driven by timing belt . drain out coolant remove part replace part fill with new coolant dont forget thermostat and gasket
Pretty easy to do. First you need to take all the collant out of the system. This is done by disconnecting you lower hose running from your radiator. This will be messy and you will need something to hold the fluid. Cats love antifreeze and will drink it. It will kill them. So properly despense it.

Then while that is draining. Loosen you belt and remove that. Once that is removed you should have access to your pump. There will be bolts running around it that will need to be removed.

Then small flat head screwdriver should be able to work it free. Make sure to clean the housing where the pump was removed from all deposits and gaskets comes off to. Cleaner the better.

Before you put your new pump make sure to use silicone around it to hold the gasket on. Put, tighted bolts and follow throught putting everything else back on and your set. But dont forget your anitfreeze. Some might also replace thermostate to. Here is a link for a pump.

August R is spot on, just make sure if the timing belt also drives the water pump, that the belt is replaced properly, and :%26quot;in tune%26quot;...might as well replace the timing belt
    No more than $300 dollars.
if you do it would cost about 70 dollars with new antifreeze but while you have it apart change timming belt also belt is about 30 dollars if a garage does it about 150-200 if dealer does it about 300 dollars if u have good tech skills about water pump and timming belt 3hrs if so so skills 5 hrs

Is my water pump gone again?

I've already had my water pump changed earlier this year however yesterday while sitting in the drive in line I started to notice my thermostat needle rise and saw smoke coming from underneath the hood. I let my brother check and there was no antifreeze. I've added the antifreeze but my car seems to still be running hot but will cool down as I'm driving. Any suggestions?
Is my water pump gone again?
Sounds like your fans aren't coming on when they are supposed to. Going down the road enough air pushes past to keep things cool, at an idle it gets hot. Start there, do the fans come on?
Is my water pump gone again?
flush the radiator and install a new thermostat (less than 10 bucks)don't think it's water pump.
your thermostat could be stuck closed too and pushing the anti- freeze out.
first low on coolant to check radiator when car is cold fill radiator and then fill overflow jug while you got hood open look for wet spots check hoses should feel some what firm all good then crank with cap off radiator watch coolant move about ten minutes or less you shoul dsee it drop and rise back up over and over if its not doing this then thermostat stuck and will need to be replace ... if the water pump is bad it will leak coolant center of car right in front you can see it drip or its wet by laying down under front of car and with a light look up recheck your coolant and belts and hoses or take it to a shop for them to check it
if its just a water pump that would be good news, often there is a bleed procedure if its not followed an air bubble trapped in the motor will not come out and it will overheat with and aluminum engine overheating one time will damage the head gasket from then on it wont run the same till the head is resurfaced and the gasket replaced
A water pump will normally leak if it's toasted. If there was no colant in the vehicle, that was problem one. If you are not leaking, and have colant on the system it's now time to replace the thermostat. I'ts a cheap part. 10-15 bucks. usually a quick fix too.
what kind of car is it.
The key here is that the pump really only makes any heat differences when driving at fair speeds otherwise the fan will engage, thermostat opens etc. There could be a small air bubble or air lock in the system too , you might want try either the coolant bleeder valve or running the engine with either the rad cap or over flow container open and stand back , if any air bubbles they should come out.

I'd be checking the anti-freeze with a anti-freeze tester , plus I'd check the thermostat hose by cold starting the engine and then squeezing the hose firmly and after a few minutes the pressure should be up if the thermostat is good.Watch and listen for the fan to engage as the engine sits idling, and check to see what the temp gage states bec the fan should end up engaging , if not check the fan fuse bec it might be blown , or the fan relay might be faulty or the temperature sensor, check as well the wiring and plug in connections for bad connections caused by rust etc.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if the coolant is worn out or dirty you'll need to flush out the old coolant and replace it but be sure you check for any leaks and hoses for cracks and if their quite soft, change them and use new hose clamps, plus change the thermostat.
could possibly be a bad radiator cap
alot of good suggestions from people here. From what you describe, with it cooling down as you drive it would appear that your fans aren't running, or that the radiator is partially plugged. I've also seen a car act this way from a cracked head gasket. I would recommend having a shop check for leaks, they will apply pressure to the system and tell you what's wrong. And a leak check is pretty cheap.
Get your engine hot with cap off radiator if you see the antifreeze moving

through the cap hole if so then check your thermostat it may be sticking at times. If you replace the thermostat and if in doubt please

do while it is out. Make sure you get the correct replacement because

they all are stamped by temperature. If it is incorrect your auto will

not run good and may use more gas.

Your water pump being new don't mean it can not go bad so plan on the

worst and hope for the best. Sounds like fan problems the way you wrote the question.

Is it hard to take the lower unit off a mercruiser 305 to change the water pump?

Depends on what model you have, most are on the front of the engine (not refering to the normal circulation pump you find in a car too, you will have that pump too). There is an impeller pump housing that pumps only %26quot;Sea Water%26quot; and has a round flat plate with about six to eight screws that hold the cover on (may face backwards). The pump is driven off the drive (fan) belt assembly and the pump (when you are standing facing the front of the engine) is on the bottom right.

Pull the cover off, take two flat blade screwdrivers and pry the rubber impeller out with even pressure from both sides. Put some soap on the new one and as you push it in, turn it the direction that it would normally run with your palm until the splines engage, then push straight it. That way the rubber impellers are laying the way they need to be when running normally.

The impellers you are thinking about are in the lower ends on outboards and some very old models inboards. Inboards are different in that regard, all the ones that are less than twenty years old are pretty much mounted on the engine instead of the outdrive.

    Good luck
Is it hard to take the lower unit off a mercruiser 305 to change the water pump?
no its not hard and im assuming you have a inboard/outboard there are 6 nuts between the upper and lower drive first you need to drain the gear oil from the lower unit there is a little plug on the bottom of the lower that has a flat groove in it thats where you drain it from and you have to also pull the same plug on the upper drive on the oppesite of drivers seat it says vent then once drained loosen the bolts and the lower will separate from the upper and theres a plastic housing that has a few nuts and remove them and theres a little rubber impeller in there and it will slide off the shaft and be careful theres a metal tab that has to go in there or it will not turn the impeller also replace all gaskets that come with the impeller kit ....you will see the metal tab as taking off the old one replace with new one and put everything back together and fill with 80-90 weight gear oil from the bottom hole .... its very important to fill from the bottom hole to prevent air getting traped in the gear case fill until it starts seeping from the vent hole up top and put plug back in and your ready to go boating again

its a simple process and once you have done it it is really easy to do
Is it hard to take the lower unit off a mercruiser 305 to change the water pump?
The first two answers are only partly correct. I think the first thing to do is determine exactly which engine drive you have. Is this an I/o or straight inboard. The engine has a circulating water pump, like a car on the front of the engine. However, it's the %26quot;raw water pump%26quot; located in the stern drive that fails. It's not that hard to replace but the boat has to be out of the water. You would need to read and understand the service manual in order to do this job.
These answers didn't do it for me either I have the same Problem

I just recently changed the water pump, but now it's not bumping the coolant through and temp rising, any idea?
Try putting a new thermostat in and make sure that your belts are in the right direction. Your friendly mechanic.
With 50 years working in the trade the fault finding methods spoken about in these posts are truly amazing. For example if you had alternator ,starter or battery trouble we would pinpoint the faulty unit in less than ten minutes and the repair would carry a six month warranty.I frequently see and hear about all three units being replaced not once ,twice or even three times and there is still doubt about the repair ,how do these people manage to hold a job.Another great favourite seems to be replacing water pumps because they are not pumping, yes we are now really in dream world, the pump is an impeller one and do not stop circulating, leaking ,perhaps ,yes.
I believe that you have an air lock created when you changed the coolant

Did you keep the engine running when you put the new coolant in?

We just did one the other day. Parts and labor at a shop figure just under 300 dollars. It's on the side of the engine, loosen the bolts that hold the pulley on, remove the serpentine belt and then take the pulley bolts the rest of the way off. Remove all the small bolts that go around the water pump, slide it out, clean the engine surface, re-install. Takes all of about an hour and a half.

Some special tools are needed to remove the power steering pump, but since you just need to move it to the side you might not need them. My e-mail address is grp9999@yahoo.com.

You might have had a air bubble, fill it again and run it 15 min and let it cool and then ckeck it. try this several times, if you are still loosing water and no external leaks then you might have a bad head gasket and could try water glass (sodium silicate) or block sealer. it can plug up the heater core, be sure to run it 20 min

i own a repair shop,,and i wouldn't add any stop leak to it,,id see if i could find the leak,,it may be in the radiator,,but if you add stop leak in it ,,it will stop up the heater core on it,and cause other problems to it,,id add water and check it,,it will show where it s leaking from, once you add some water in it,,and it may just be leaking while its running,,but id check it real good,,also see if you have a wet floor board,,,other wise just take your time and you will find it,,good luck i hope this help,s.
JUST FILL THE RADIATOR WITH ANTIFREEZE AND WATER , AND SEE IF IT IS LEAKING , PUT RADIATOR CAP BACK ON TIGHT LEAVE HOOD UP AND LEAVE ENGINE IDLING UNTIL IT HEARS UP , IF LEAKING YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TOO SEE IT , YOUR BATTERY WILL NOT HEAT UP , THIS HAS NOTHING AT ALL TOO DO WITH YOUR BATTERY , BUT YOU WILL BLOW YOUR ENGINE IF YOU DRIVE WITHOUT THE PROPER AMOUNT OF COOLENT IN IT ,
Get a new car. The one you have is almost 30 years old, and they don't last forever.
No water in the radiator will have absolutely zero effect on the battery. Batteries only overheat when they are overstressed or overcharged. Your problems are much bigger if you drive your vehicle with a dry radiator. A dry rad means no water flowing through your engine block. This will result in almost immediate overheating leading to very quickly to expensive things breaking internally in your engine. The first thing you should do is fill your rad with water and then run the engine to see where the leak is coming from. Since you just had the water pump replaced, I can't help but wonder if the installation wasn't done properly and that is the source of your problem. When you add the water (or anti-freeze) to the rad, start the car, but leave the radiator cap off (for older cars, without an overflow tank) or just fill up the overflow tank. As the car runs, the engine should draw water out of the rad (or o/f tank). Keep it topped up as the level changes until you are certain that the cooling system is full. You should be able to detect the leak by now. If you cannot, it is quite likely that the mechanic that replaced the water pump didn't go through this procedure and left your engine without enough coolant to properly take care of itself. Keep an eye on it for a few days to make sure everything is OK.

How do I change the water pump in a 1978 40hp Mercury Outboard?

The details vary from motor to motor, but here's a general description of the procedure:

Disconnect shift rod, remove lower unit retaining bolts (including possibly the torque tab and one or two bolts up under the antiventilation plate, depending on your model). Pull the lower unit off. Four bolts hold the pump housing in place. slide the impeller up over the drive shaft. Off with the old base plate, on with the new. Slide the new impeller down over the drive shaft, putting the woodruff key in the keyway just before the impeller covers it. Put a new housing gasket in place. Put a little grease in the new pump housing and slide it over the drive shaft. Turn the shaft clockwise while pushing the housing down over the impeller. Put the water tube and water tube grommet in place. Put a bit of molly lube on the drive shaft splines (but not on top of the driveshaft), so you won't have to pound it with a hammer to get it off next time. Use antisieze or something similar (I use OMC gasket sealant) on the lower unit retaining bolts to prevent corrosion from setting in and freezing them up. Most outboards call for something on the joint between lower unit and exhaust housing, I use 3m 847 but permatex #2 is ok too, just a little harder to clean next time around. Button it up and go fishing!

With a good service manual and a set of hand tools, you can do it, but there's too many details and to many variations. Don't rely on my memory - get the manual.
How do I change the water pump in a 1978 40hp Mercury Outboard?
This question is repeated in Boating questions almost daily. If your reasonably competent, you should be able to get through it with out much difficulty. First, get a service manual and read it before you go to unbolting. Second, get the parts kit, so you know what goes where. Then take your time and don't force anything. The actual procedure isn't much different from model to model.

  • How to change a water pump?

I have a geo metro 93 lsi 3 cylander car. I need to change the water pump. also the timing belt but i dont have the manual. id ont know how tight the belt needs to be on, any helP?
How to change a water pump?
I thought those cars came in 6 packs, and when one breaks you just crush it on your forehead like a beer can and pop a new one! LOL, No really I used to have a Sprint and the 3 banger was the same. The water pump is down usually behind the fan on the side of the motor, and roughly in the middle of the engine. It has a pulley on it and a belt that drives it. There will be an alternator, that has wires and lots of holes in it. Then you may have a pulley for the Air cond. if you have that. next is the power steering pump if you have it and that will have a place to fill it with fluid, so thats how you can tell what it is. Then the main fan belt on the big fan, and then should be a little pulley down in there that is sticking out of the engine. That should be your water pump. It will probably be in a tight place as they usually are. You will have to take all the components off that are in front of it to get to it. When you get all that stuff out of the way, the pump usually is just attached with a few bolts and a gasket. It may have to be forced off but dont use a screw driver or anything sharp to pry on it. I would hit the pulley end with a hammer lightly to knock it off. Use a good gasket remover and a rag over a piece of flat wood or hard plastic to clean it off. It is very important to have a totally clean surface on the motor to seal it to, or it will leak. I use denatured alcohol to clean the mating surfaces to remove any oils. It sounds like alot of attention to detail, but if you want to only do it once then it is worth it. Another thing is make sure you buy a high quality pump and have it tested if they can before you put it on. Dont ever buy a pump that has a %26quot;lifetime replacement warranty%26quot; because they know that if it doesnt work, they just give you another crappy one. You have to do all the work again and see it that one works. When you put it all together, try to resist using too much sealant. make sure you use a high temp good quality sealer and gasket. A light skin is all you need of the sealer on both the engine and new pump. Put the gasket on the pump and bolt it back, I usually give it over night to cure before I put fluid in and fire it up. I have had good luck with that combo.

As for the Timing belt, that is a little more involved and you have to take the side of the motor apart. It is not a job for amateurs as there are many parts to line up just right when you put the new belt on and if you mess it up your engine could be damaged when you crank it. It has to do with the timing of the engine and the top of the motor. With a manual and a friend that knows a bit about cars you should be able to do it. Good luck!
How to change a water pump?
Best bet is the library for a book. Geo and Suzuki share a lot of engineering and probably are the same in your case. Timing belt is tricky..no slack but don't over tighten

Is this the same car with injector problem? If so check the head gasket by doing a compression test, I think it's gone out on you from over heat. good luck
Timing belt has a tension-er and If you have never done this before, without supervision, I don't recommend it. When you go to start your engine, coolant will be everywhere period

How do i change the water pump on my 1999 GMC Safari?
If you can't even figure that one out don't try playing mechanic!
I have not done one on a van that new but on the older ones if you dont have A/C still working I found it to be faster to remove the radiator and grill and work from the front. If your had A/C but it no longer works just remove the condenser and dont put it back in. If the AC still works then its really not practical to remove it so its up to you if you want to remove the radiator since it only gains you about 2%26quot; of space.

Timing Belt and Water pump issues?

I have a 1999 Nissan Frontier V6 3.3L. I had my timing belt and water pump changed last week and my car has been giving me two problems since. 1. I have a very rough idle and 2. My check engine light is giving me a code p0300 which is a random misfire. What is going on and how do I fix it?
Timing Belt and Water pump issues?
A random misfire will give you a rough idle. I hope the mechanic installed the belt correctly or the cam timing will be way off. Look to see if any plug wires are broken at the ends and just stuck onto the plug or cap if it has wires. The timing marks on the cam and crank have to be lined up correctly or the valves will open at the wrong time causing all kinds of problems, even bent valves. Take it back to whoever worked on it.
Timing Belt and Water pump issues?
sounds like the timing belt isnt put on right, its probably off a tooth or 2. what probably happened when whoever put the belt on, the cam moved with them and through the timing off. thats why your suppose to put something in the guage hole of the cam to keep it from moving, until you get the belt on. better be checking that timing.
Nissan 3.0 and 3.3 engines are really hard to purge the air out of the cooling system, sometimes this procedure can take up to a half an hour. Chances are likely that when the technician replaced the water pump and timing belt he removed and replaced the ignition wires. These wires are 7mm wires and will only last up to 100 thou miles, you are now getting either cross fire from the wires or shorting to ground. Take it back to whoever did the work and have them fix the problem, do not let them charge you labor and do not use after market wires.
yes who did the work on it take back and tale them what it is doing before it becomes worse.
have it pulled back to who did work dont run it and tell them to place belt on right way this time. its off a tooth or so. one tooth is all it takes to cause misfire. if it had distribitor you could turn it one way or another and correct problem but im guessing its got a ignition module. wich means timing belt has to be moved to right tooth.

How to replace water pump on a 93' Mustang 5.0?

I would like to know how difficult it is to change a water pump on my mustang? Is it something I can do by myself? I do know about cars and can perform general maintenance, I am not totally ignorant to whats going on underneath the hood of my car I'm just not sure if I have the tools needed and how difficult it is to do. What tools do I need? Do I need a torque wrench? If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it. Thanks!
How to replace water pump on a 93' Mustang 5.0?
It's not hard, just time consuming. You will need BOTH metric and standard size sockets %26amp; deep sockets and/or wrenches. For the tensioner pulley you only need 18mm closed-end wrench and you can pull upwards on the tensioner to release tension on the belt. Use a brand new water pump. Do not EVER use a remanufactured water pump. With a new pump you will have a lifetime warranty from any of the popular brand name auto parts stores. For the water pump the battery being disconnected is not required. That is required depending on the car you're working on, but on a 5.0L Mustang it's not. Be sure to stop by Walmart or parts store and pick up a tube of Permatex Blue RTV. Apply a thin bead of RTV on the gasket mating surface then put the gasket on. Don't do this until you're ready to put the pump on. Be sure to use a good scraper to remove old gasket material from the gasket mating surface of the timing cover. DO NOT USE A TORQUE WRENCH ON WATER PUMP BOLTS ON A 5.0L MUSTANG. These bolts are very hard to find now. You only need to snug them at first and then hand tighten them. The factory bolts are notorious for corroding and becoming stuck in the block after their heads snap off. Do not turn the bolts too quickly and be sure to clean them off with a wire brush if they have ANY corrosion and spray them with lubricant before reinserting. I'll have to disagree on having any manual for these cars. Haynes, Chilton, and the like are all a waste of paper. For the best info on this task register on www.corral.net/forums. There's a Windsor Engine Tech section in there that you can search through. Register and post on there from now on so you don't get answers here on Yahoo that are just %26quot;thrown out%26quot; to you.
How to replace water pump on a 93' Mustang 5.0?
This is a straightforward task that can be difficult for the novice, but it's not impossible.

You will need basic automotive hand tools, wrenches, sockets in metric.

Also, you will need a good shop manual for this car. A torque wrench is optional, most professional mechanics don't torque the fasteners involved with this job.

Take pictures of the engine from various angles, it will help in reassembly. Don't forget to disconnect the battery also.

Be certain to draw a diagram of how the serpentine belt(s) are routed around the pulleys, if no such aid exists on the radiator support.

By all means buy a reputable brand NEW pump, don't bother with a rebuilt unit.

With some mechanical knowledge and basic common sense you can do this, take your time, don't rush.

    Good Luck !

Someone/anybody, I need to change the water pump on a 95 Pontiac Grand and I need some instructions?
i'm assuming you have a 3.1,remove the drive belt, then remove the water pump pully bolts, should be 4, then remove the water pump bolts , should be 5, clean surface of old gasket, glue new gasket to pump, reinstall, in reverse. then you have to bleed the cooling system, they have a small screw in the pipe rite on top of the water pump housing , loosen screw, fill system till all air is removed , and water just comes out.

How do I remove the fan in front of the pulley on my water pump, so I can change my water pump? 91, 318i?

I cant get the damn pulley off??
How do I remove the fan in front of the pulley on my water pump, so I can change my water pump? 91, 318i?
I think you need a special tool %26quot;puller or extracter%26quot; which you can buy or hire from tool shops.
How do I remove the fan in front of the pulley on my water pump, so I can change my water pump? 91, 318i?
take the bolts out and it should come off, if it doesn't hit the back of the fan blade with a rubber hammer as it might have some rust holding it.
If you can get the water pump off without removeing the fan it will be easier to remove the fan after. Otherwise you'll need to loosen the fan bolts not all the way out and use a screw driver for leverage and get a wrench on the big nut. It does depend on the type of fan you have. You may need to get a big puller. Harbor frieght has a set of 3 that are very resonabley priced. With out looking at it or knowing what type of car you have It's hard to tell.
The nut that holds the fan on the water pump must be turned clockwise to loosen it,if you do not have a wrench that will fit in there you can use along screw driver and hammer locate the tip of the screw driver on the edge of the nut and hit the other side of the screw driver with the hammer one or two blows should do it,and then spin the fan and see if the nut turnes. If this does not work you need to get the proper wrench.I have done both but i had to buy the wrench from Snap On and another tool to hold the water pump bolts.
    I have a 91 318is and I had that same problem.

First off, I always pull the radiator, seems like with that engine so tightly stuffed in there, it's the only way to make any room to work with. Remember it has 3 (yes, three) water hoses connecting to it, also when you put it back in, I use electrical cable ties to secure it (makes the next removal easier).

The fan is easy once you get that out, it's the pulley I never could get off!!! The manual suggests you secure the pulley in order to loosen that effin' bolt...

I still couldn't get it off, I ended up taking it someplace.

Hope you have better luck, but yeah, pull the radiator and shroud out of the way.
These fans are called the viscous fan, there are 4 ten mill bolts on the front of the fan and you have to hold blades of the fan with 1 hand and with the other loosen the bolts you will need to use a socket and a rachet but it is very tricky and to do it correctly you will need some mechanical experience so i advice to take it to your local garage otherwise in the long run you do some serious damage to youe engine if you do not fit it back correctly,
Hi Bill, There are many types of viscus fans %26amp; not sure of yours, does it have a large nut-head between back of fan %26amp; pump? If so i can possibly save you a lot of trouble. If your intrested just ask. Good luck.
Do you have the viscouse clutch type fan, ( can you turn the blade freely by hand)? If so you need a 32mm wrench with a slight off set. available at halfords. Turn the large nut behind the clutch unit clockwise (lefthand thread). Should be out your way then. Otherwise its a fixed fan, make sure you got all the bolts, and some carefull persuasion.

    Good luck!
either get a 32mm spanner or use a chisel and big hammer its us ally left hand thread

How ofthen should you change the water pump on your vehicle?
    when it stops working
I change mine every month just so it doesn't develop a leak.
only if you notice a leak.

my answer to this is ...... if it ain't broke don't fix it...... but here are some signs to let you know when the water pump if failing the most common is engine over heating, you start to see anti freeze on the ground... other than that leave it alone and also if you hear some sqealing of the belt take a look at it and see if it is glazed over or wet
Largely depend on the make and model of your vehicle. For instance, when changing timing belts for Toyota 4 Runners and Tacomas, more than 50% of water pumps already developed some leak; but for water pumps in Camrys many still in good conditions, no leaks when changing the timing belt second time.
The water pump itself isn't something that goes bad usually. Either you develop a bad bearing or a leaky seal. If no coolant comes out of the weep hole on the pump, then the seal is good. If you can grab the pulley with both hands and try to move it and feel no play or slop, then the bearings are good. If there is leakage or sloppy bearings then it's time to change the pump.
you should,nt need to change it until it goes bad.
Only if you have problems with it. OR if you are rebuilding an old engine. Don't just pull off a water pump that works, true waste of money.

Changed water pump, now car overheats?

the car ran fine before i changed the pump, it just leaked coolant due to a seal in the water pump, so i changed the water pump, and now my coolant light is on, but i refilled the coolant, and when i drive it for about a mile it overheats and the coolant starts %26quot;boiling%26quot; out of the over flow....

the upper radiator hose seemed warm, but i have not replaced the thermostat....

    what could be wrong?
Changed water pump, now car overheats?
sounds like u just need to burp the system(air pocket in the coolant system) ,run the car with the rad. cap off till it reaches normal running temp.and the t-stat opens watch for the coolant to circulate in the rad,it may be possible that the t-stat got stuck in the close position, and also check that ur cooling fans are coming on.
Changed water pump, now car overheats?
A great big air bubble in the system or the wrong water pump
check your fan motor, fan relay, fan fuse, also use the air bleeder valve to bleed the air out of your system autozone.com has a componet locator, repair manual, and a trouble shooting guide to help you
an air bubble and its probable a good idea to change the thermostat when you change a water pump u should change the thermostat just to be safe that and it probably hasent been changed for a long time so chang it i work in a shop. but you are your own person so do what you think you should ok

if the water is leaking from the engine block it probably is not the water pump but what is the make of the car?

How do you change a water pump in a 1957-58 mercury mark 10 outboard?

I did it on a Johnson of that vintage many years ago. You need a few basic hand tools, mainly a screwdriver and a wood mallet. Remove the lower unit, remove the old pump impeller, replace it and reassemble the unit. The first time you do it allow the whole weekend just in case. If you are handy, maybe 4 hours if everything goes right.

Should I change my water pump?

I have a jeep cherokee that is leaking water. I can see where it leaks, right at the water pump. Should I get a new one and change it out, or should I just take it off and try to reattach it so it doesn't leak? Is it hard to do?
Should I change my water pump?
If it is leaking you will need to take it off. The labor involved will most likely be way more than the cost of the water pump. Water pumps are fairly inexpensive so it makes sense to put a new one in. Depending on the type of car you drive you may have a timing belt running on the same belt as the water pump, If so you will probably need to reset your timing as well. Usually when a timing belt is changed the water pump is replaced with it if it is run off the same belt. Timing belts are usually changed at between 60,000 miles and 100,000 miles depending on the car and engine.
Should I change my water pump?
youll still have to take out all the coolant in the engine regardless if you get a new one or just take off the old one and put it on again. also theres a gasket around the waterpump that requires rtv sealant, or room temperature vulcanizing sealant which in other words means it helps it seal along with the gasket.

id say for cheap insurance just get a new one and put it on. and make sure to empty the coolant because you will have to.
The water pump is built with a weep hole when it is fried. that helps releive the motor from blowing up.

When the water pumps leaks, replace it. Buy the new gasket and new glue for it as well.

Also good idea to replace the coolant. Go ahead and replace the thermastat as well, since we are going into the winter season. Plus it helps eliminate the fear of the car messing up again in the near future, causing the consumer to complain about the mechanic.

When the water pump goes, its usually due to rottening, just like the thermastat. Same car, same heating system, yeah, they go neck to neck. Replace both of them and relieve yourself of future problems that usually take place within a months time apart.

change it! if it,s leaking then it,s safe to say the seal is leaking.

I agree with the above post .Get a manual for the motor usualy at any marine shop or west marine is were i found mine at.Basically consists of draining the lower engine lube, taking out the bolts (is where the manuel really comes in handy.)Then removing the lower unit, when you get the impeller our book didnt tell us this ,ut the impeller will be of a larger diameter than the housing, if you take dish soap and apply it to the fins then you can help force it in there , just make sure once it is in ,hat all the fins are being roatated to the same way, either all facing left or all facing right. The hardest part is just reinstalling and aligning the lower unit shaft back up.Then bolt everything back up and refill the unit with lower unit with engine lube untill it over flows from a hole, agian your book will tell you where to fill it in at and what to look for.Good luck
hi you need to get the workshop manual for your motor. You can go to the library I am sure they will have one. The basics though... make sure you have a lower unit gaskey set, a full water pump rebuild kit and the correct impellor.

You need the manual so that you can locate the correct bolts to loosen and the procedure for disconecting the gear shifting mechanism.

With the manual its an easy job. without.. its kind of pot luck if you have never done it before. I have changed impellors and water pumps on many different boat motors and i have aways used the manuals. Even now I would still use the manual as a reference to change the impellor and water pump housing in my Johnson even though i have done it before. The manual will probily cost about $25 but it will save you hundreds in the long run as you will be able to trouble shoot other problems.

  • How long will it take to change the water pump on my 1993 dodge caravan?

    Depends on the ENGINE SIZE...

The 3.3L v6 is simple. Labour time is only 1 hour start to finish.

The 2.5 4cyl. is harder to get at. Labour time is 1.6 hours, add .5 if it has A/C.

The most difficult is the v6 3.0L as the pump is driven by the timing belt.

Labour time is 4 hours + .4 for A/C... Plus Plus...

Your looking at roughly a $500 bill.
    depends on where you live.

the book probably calls for about 3hrs labor plus parts

I work on auto's in my shop at home after hours and I'd normally charge about 100 to125.00 plus parts to do this.

    so shop around
call a few garages in your area and get prices.find the best priced one and if you can afford it then drop it off ..or you could?? if you are so inclined to mechenanics ;you could get a book on your model jeep read it look at the engin waterpump and maybe with a friend that has done some engin work do it yourself, its not FM you know, ( f^%26amp;*^in magic) jeep (just empty every pocket)

Honda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time?

I've done 200,000km from new in %26quot;severe conditions%26quot; [ ie hot Australian climate all year ] and had one timing belt change. Now due for the 2nd. One mechanic reckons to replace water pump at the same time as preventative maintenance seeing he's got that part of the engine opened up. Another mechanic reckons I could get 300,000km out of a water pump. The pump is not making any noise at this time. Any help appreciated.
Honda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time?
On your Honda the WP is driven by the timing belt. Very little extra labor is involved in replacing it as long as they are already in there to do the belt anyway. The WP may be working just fine now, but if it fails next week or next month or next year you'll have to pay all that labor cost again to go back in and change it out.

I always recommend replacing the WP on Honda's with every-other T-belt change, but it is preventive, not required maintenance and therefore entirely up to you. Just remember that if you opt not to replace it and it fails later on, you can't blame the mechanic. He gave you the option.

    ASE Certified Automotive Service Advisor
Honda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time?
Do the change. It's worth it in the long run.
The water pump is run by the timing belt. It doesn't cost a dime more in labor to change it, merely the cost of the part.

We always change the water pump.
You have a real smart mechanic keep him,he has your best interests at heart, makes good sense to replace pump at the same time, water pumps give very little warning before they spit there guts, noise is not a good indicator of worn pump anyway.Been a mechanic for 46yrs in Canada
If that pump dies, it could take the timing belt with it, which would likely cause severe damage to the valves.

It's very smart to replace it before it fails.
Always change the pump. Yiou've been lucky so far - I've never found a pump that lasted for 200,000 km. Otherwise, when the pump goes, you;'ll have to have the timing belt removed again to access the pump...basically paying for the belt replacement twice.

How do you change the water pump on a 2001 Taurus VIN "U"?

I looks like it has a motor mount bolted through it, and that seems like a pretty stupid design. Do you have to block up the motor?
How do you change the water pump on a 2001 Taurus VIN %26quot;U%26quot;?
I don't think it's bolted thru it, it just appears to be... I think it attaches to the upper intake if I remember.

    if it's the 3.0 2 valve motor

Basically remove the dogbone, the coolant jug (after draining the fluid into a pan ..plug is under the plastic cover on left side)... remove the belt... remove the pulley and remove the water pump.... I can't remember if the hose attaches to the pump or the pump backing.. if it attaches to the pump remove it from the pump.... just reassemble and that's about the ust of it...

Book would be better for all the small details I kind of passed over
How do you change the water pump on a 2001 Taurus VIN %26quot;U%26quot;?
Buy a Chilton's book they give easy step by step directions.
If it seems stupid it is probably just how Ford designed it. Have fun

95 cadillac seville northstar engine sls Had a leaky water pump so I changed it. When I started engine the?

cooling fans ran for 3 seconds and have not come back on. The top heater hose to radiator is red hot and the bottom radiator hose which connects to thermostat housing is ice cold. Coolant temp reaches 210 degrees in about 10 minutes. Could the thermostat suddenly gone bad, it was ok before I changed the pump????
95 cadillac seville northstar engine sls Had a leaky water pump so I changed it. When I started engine the?
You have an air lock, bleed the air from the cooling system,

hot water not air will allow the stat to open

do this by loosening hose to remove air, then start engine
95 cadillac seville northstar engine sls Had a leaky water pump so I changed it. When I started engine the?
OK One Fan is for the A/C Condenser, Does it come on when you turn on the A/C? If not you may have inadvertently shorted the wiring when Replacing the Pump. Radiator fan most likely is the Thermostat! Sensor the Signals the Relay to Cycle the fan works only with the Thermostat Open and Coolant is Flowing. Good Radiator Shop if you're not sure how to Repair the System. Cooling Systems on the %26quot;NorStar Engines%26quot; are Good (In most cases Better) but Difficult to handle some times.
you have an air pocket in the system as bustass says, but do not remove the hose, just remove the cap l;et run to operating temp with the heat on and the fan speed on high, let run till cooling fans cycle you will see the system burp, also squeeze the upper radiator hose a couple of times while the cap is off.once all the air is out you can refill the coolant to the hot level, replace the cap and your good to go.
Make sure you got the right water pump

depending on the options for you car, the belt may route a different way which sometimes turns the water pump backwards!!!

Sound crazy but I've seen it before

Similar pumps may fit the engine but it's internal fins maybe wrong for your application
    Yes
sounds like it, it is easier to change the thermostat, and see if that works than redoing the waterpump

if it is a 3.1 or 3.4 liter engine it's fairly simple to acsses and change but if it is a 3.8 liter it will be harder to change but regardless of which engine you have getting the air out of the cooling system after the install is tricky and you don't want an air lock.

My car is building up pressure in the radiator, i changed the water pump, thermostat and radiator.?

I drove it today, had heat and everything, when I turned the car off and checked the radiator, it was like a fountain of antifreeze...what could cause this?
My car is building up pressure in the radiator, i changed the water pump, thermostat and radiator.?
The radiator cap should NEVER be removed while the engine is hot! The cap is designed to hold a certain pressure in the cooling system to keep boiling temp of the antifreeze down. The cap will release pressure when it exceeds about 15 psi so any extra pressure caused by any leaking gasket into the cooling system will be released.

If you are concerned about too much pressure in there have the cap tested it should release any pressure over about 15 psi. NEVER open a radiator cap when the engine is hot!! You could scald yourself or anyone near by.

    j
My car is building up pressure in the radiator, i changed the water pump, thermostat and radiator.?
Blown head gasket. Find a good independent mechanic.
Fountain of antifreeze, when you opened it?

Well, if so, it's normal, hot coolant expands and will spray if radiator cap is removed.

However if it's building up too much pressure and you hear bubling, your head gasket might be failed, thus letting the combustion gases to enter the cooling system. Not a good thing.

    Good luck.
NEVER open the radiator cap when the engine is hot.The cooling system is under pressure once the engine reaches operating temperature. Its suppose to build up pressure.
Leaking head gasket get it done asp.As others have said never remove a radiator cap with the engine hot.
It's a good idea to get the whole system %26quot;flushed%26quot; every now, and then. Sludge builds up
check your hoses it might have cracked form cold to hot weather and this will lose pressure in the hose and possibly build up pressurre in the radiator very uncommon though. u also might have somthing cloged in the hose itself. if u already did all that work to u might as well change the hoses. other than that i dont know what to tell you.
cracked block did u over heat or freeze?
Do a compression test, you may have a slight head gasket leak into the coolant system. Also while running at warmed up running temp , leave rad/cap off and inspect the coolant at the neck for bubbles .this is a sure sign of a internal coolant leak. also check your dip stick , Oil turns a light tan color when contaminated with water or anti freeze.
I trust you saw the CAUTION DON'T OPEN HOT label.

It's on the cap for a reason

If your still building pressure, time for a head gasket

    Worse case, a head
either you did not get all the air out of the system,,,or possibly have a blown head gasket
Thats normal. If you remember high school chemistry, when the coolant gets hot, it expands in volume because the molecules are in a excited energy state. Its the same as a pressure cooker, when it gets hot, and you take the lid off, steam spews everywhere. Most coolant systems operate somewhere between 10 and 20 psi.

If you want to check the coolant level, let the car cool off to the air temperature, or at least until you can put your hand on the engine and its only slightly warm.

My truck has an overflow cap that opens when the coolant pressure reaches 16 psi so that the hoses don't explode.

How much doest it cost to change timing belt and water pump for Mitsubish Magna 1997 sedan?
I can't recommend any shops for you, too far away.

Ask family or friends for good repairers.

The belt can be purchased as a kit, with seals and tensioner included. The kit will cost about $250.

The waterpump will cost about $200 for a genuine unit, or about $100 for an aftermarket one.

Just add 5 hours of labour ( at whatever rate ), and the cost of coolant.

This is a rough guide for a V6 engine Magna
Depends on if your engine is the 4 or 6 cylinder model.

The V6 will cost more as you have twice as many cams to time and the water pump sits deep in the engine valley.

What can cause the check engine light to come on after a new water pump?

They replaced the water pump and changed the antifreeze. Now the check engine light is on. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it. The light went off but then it came back on. There are no noticable problems. Could they have left a sensor unplugged?
What can cause the check engine light to come on after a new water pump?
a connector left loose is the first thing that i would look for.
What can cause the check engine light to come on after a new water pump?
With all the sensors and relays on cars these days you will find that in many instances that when you replace a part or sensor that another one in line is also bad. That's why they have code checkers. Stop by almost any parts store next time the light comes on and have the code checked. This will tell you whats wrong without going through part after part until you get it right.
It is possible that may have happened, look and see if there is anything not plugged in.
most likely it could be the crankshaft position sensor. That would definitely cause the check engine light to come on.

How long to change the water pump on a ford escort?
    1 hour
    Depending on the year/engine

usually takes 2 to 4 hrs.
if you have a mk1 2 or 3 the simplicity of the cars design means if you know what your doing it should only take an hour or 2 newer models take longer but it shouldn't be to hard good luck
    every 6 months
it will be about 1 hour, unless the bolts snap! Then give it 4 hours!
well simply if there quite a bit of room infront of the water pump so u can take the belt, pulley, and nuts, then probably and hour or two. but if it looks very tight by it then about 3-4 maybe even 5 if it requires u to lift out the engine. but then also give some time about 20 min to properly fill and remove any bubbles in the cooling system.
You Need to state Model as in engine size, age and stuff, As there are just so many Engines been put in an Escort over the years, I did a water pump on a 1995 M reg 1.8 Zetec a few months ago, took me in total 5 hours as some bolts would not come out,was a pain in the @ss but they did in the end with time to think about it, please update your details....Edit...For the Benefit of those not all in the No!!...All Escort Engines After about 1986 were fitted with 1.3,1.4 ,1.6. Easy way to change water pump on 1995 grand cherokee laredo?

For starters, go buy a Haynes manual from your local parts store for your model. They are perfect for the shadytree mechanic, with pictures and step-by-step outlines on what needs to be done. Next, this is a moderate job, not too hard. First, remove the negative battery cable. Then remove the serpentine belt system on the front of the engine. This usually means loosening the power steering pump bracket that keeps pressure on the belt. Next, remove the upper radiator hose from the thermostat and tie back. Then remove the hose from the outlet tube on top of the water pump to the heater core and tie back. Next, remove the radiator fan clutch and fan. This is simple and self explanatory when you see it. Just make sure to keep pressure on the fan, otherwise it will spin and possibly cut you. You may need to remove some power steering pump bracket bolts that also run through the water pump body. When this is clear, remove the remaining bolts from the water pump body and remove the water pump. You will need to clean the mating surfaces on the engine to free the old paper gasket. This is also a good time to change the thermostat, as this may have added to the water pump failing. Once this is done, install the new water pump and gasket- thermostat and gasket- and all parts in opposite of removal.

    1. Make sure you clean the mating surfaces thoroughly.

    2. Any debris that makes it into the engine block MUST be removed before reinstallation.

    3. When reinstalling the belt, make sure tension is at 3/4 to 1%26quot; of play (Once installed, pull up with one finger to find tension).

    4. To avoid airlock after installation, which keeps the thermostat from opening at high temps, fill the block with cool water from the thermostat housing opening before reinstallation of the thermostat. Fill until the water pours freely from the hole, with the water pump already installed.

I hope this helps, yet these are only guidelines. The Haynes manual, which usually run 10 dollars, will guide you through this process. Just make sure you remember #4, this is a routine problem when working on a cooling system, and can cause headaches if not performed properly. Doing this yourself will save you hundreds, so Good Luck.

A good mechanic in a well equipped shop should be able to change a water pump in about two hours. If you're trying to do it yourself, in the back of an unheated garage in the middle of winter, it may take a bit longer.

At least a couple hours, it's not that hard if you know what you are doing, I don't recommend you doing it on your own if you don't have the skills or the tools
it takes about 2 hours if you know what you are going. the water pump runs off of your timeing belt. so you have to be careful not to get it out of timeing.

It is a Mercury 7.5 hp, 2 stroke, model 75, outboard

this should be all the info needed....
What is the procedure for changing the water pump on my boat motor?
It is really easy to remove the lower unit and replace your impeller. The

first thing to do is shift it into forward gear. Then on the underside of the cavitation plate by the prop there is a 1/2 inch nut to remove. After that there is another nut at the rear of the unit about 1 foot up from the bottom and it is a 9/16 nut.Once these are off the unit will come off. Then you need to remove the 2 7/16 nuts that hold the water pump housing on and you can then install your new impeller. When you are putting the unit back on make sure that your water tube goes back into the right spot.Hope this helps and good luck.
What is the procedure for changing the water pump on my boat motor?
Basic removal should be easy, on a Johnson, you remove the lower unit to expose the impeller on the pump, it is just below the water line on most of them. You should try to get a service manual on the motor. Maybe Amazon .com
put gear in neatral position then goe to lower unit and remove all cap screws bolting it on...also one under aluminum adjustable fin just above prop... follow shiftershaft ...usually external from main lowe unit housing .but there could be a window into casing on side....it wont come apart without undoing it...it may be in engine compartment but you should remember this while doing the removal ...! slide unit apart ..this will show you the covered housing..undo it and ...there is the impellar....replace with new one ..dont use any lube !

Where is the water pump on a 1994 dodge intrepid?

we are trying to change the water pump on a 1994 dodge intrepid but need to know where it is located we have the parts thank you
Where is the water pump on a 1994 dodge intrepid?
on a 94 it could be a 3.3 or 3.5. on a 3.3 it is on the left side on the front of the engine towards the bottom. if it is a 3.5 it is driven by the timing belt inside the timing cover and shoudl be replaced by someone proficient at timing belts or you could bend your valves.
Where is the water pump on a 1994 dodge intrepid?
If your car has a 2.7 engine open the hood and face the engine.

Look down it'd the one near the top on the drivers side.

But better yet go on line to Auto Zone they will give you step by step instructions on there web site.
if it happens to be a 3.3 engine its located on the left side of the engine and isn't to hard to change,if its a 3.5 you have to do water pump and timing belt on it and a new tensioner, they make a kit that comes with everything you need to do it with, and if you don't get it back in time it can and will bend some valves on it,id let a pro do it if its got the 3.5 in it,those are good engines, but they have to be put back in proper time,or it will bend a valve, most shops can do this, now would also be a real good time to change the water pump on it,good luck with it.

I'm in the middle of changing my water pump right now on a '95 Maxima (same configuration).

If you suspect timing chain problem is due to the changeout, it could be that the chain tensioner was not reinstalled correctly since you need to retract the tensioner piston/plunger or remove it before removing the water pump.

However, I would highly recommend having a professional at least diagnose the problem before trying to do the repair yourself. Then you have some confidence on what's really wrong with it before diving into the timing cover - not fun! It might cost a few bucks for the troubleshooting, but it would be well worth it to avoid going down the wrong path and possibly making things worse.

I would not for any reason let someone who is not experienced with vehicle touch your timimg belt. If they make one slight mistake you will be screwed, You can bend your valves. So no no no dont do it that way. Cause if you cant afford to have a professional do the water pupm and timing belt which is always best to do together you wont be able to afford for some to change you bent valves. Find a shop that will let you make payments..
go to autozone.com, look up timing belt for you're vehicle. On the left side of the page is repair info, press on it and it will give you instructions, pictures of timing marks, and everything you need.
unless they completely changed things around then the waterpump doesnt connect to the timing gear or chain but runs off the crank n cam shaft.check ur timing n u can do it ur self or friend.

  • How do you change the water pump impeller on a Mariner 200 hp outboard motor?

Drop the lower unit by removing the nuts that hold it together. Don't forget the capscrew that is hidden under the trim zinc. Remove the water pump housing. Slide the impeller up the shaft, then if you are changing the entire pump put in the new pump base. Clean off the saft and splines at the top. Slide the new impeller down the shaft. Put the w/p housing on, it will go over the impeller easier if you twist the prop shaft in the CORRECT direction of rotation. (that way the impeller is oriented correctly). Tighten the w/p housing screws. Grease the splines and slide the lower unit back upo. It will be easier if you have some help and they rotate the flywheel to line up the splines. Don't forget to line up the shift shaft splines also as you put it together. make sure you don't shift it while its apart! Tighten all the nuts and the capscrew. Done
How do you change the water pump impeller on a Mariner 200 hp outboard motor?
split the lower unit off the head. remove the spacer. remove the impeller shaft. remove the water pump housing. ( may have to take the impeller shaft and housing off together). you should then see the rubber waterpump impeller on the bottom of the shaft. remove it with care to not damage the shaft. lubricate the new one with lithimum grease and reassemble in reverse order.

    Good luck.

How difficult is it to change the water pump in a 2001 chrysler town and country?

today my can started squeeling and smoking under the hood.....5 min later it was overheating.....i was given an estimate of 300 dollars and was wandering if this is something that i could tackle myself?
How difficult is it to change the water pump in a 2001 chrysler town and country?
when the body style changed for 01, the water pump moved to the backside of the engine. you have to remove the pulley with the pump now, and you have to remove the motor mount or use a 4 ft prybar to move the engine to the left for clearance. you have to use a 10mm gearwrench for the top 2 bolts. it would be a horrible job to do without a hoist. you're probably better off to let them do it if you don't have the tools. if you have the equipment its not that bad. it takes 1.5 hours per the labor time guide.
How difficult is it to change the water pump in a 2001 chrysler town and country?
its a pretty hard job on that one to do,if you was given the price of 300 ,id take it,because by the time you get it done you will have wished you had paid to have it done, there hard to get too,and very little room to work in also,id think about it before i started on it,because once you start it ,you just about have to finish it,take a look at it in the day time, there's not much room in there too work on this one with, good luck on it.
3.0 is under the timing cover, may as well do the timing belt at the same time. on a 3.3 all you need to do is remove the rf wheel and splash pan, remove the serpentine belt and its visible towards the front. 1.5-2 hrs. not sure on the 3,8. hope this helps
If you T%26amp;C has the 3.8.its about an hour's job, with the proper tools.I just had mine done-2000 T%26amp;C. I had a friend do it because I didnt have the tools. He said the biggest deal was the serpintine belt. Also, change the thermostat.
sounds like the bearing went in the water pump huh? they arent too bad....depending on the size...most of them are an %26quot;insert%26quot; about 8 8mm bolts and its out. (of course you have to remove the pulley and belt though%26quot;. Not bad though....

How much to pay to have water pump changed on 1995 Caravan?

It depends what engine yo have. If it is a 3.3 liter it is easy. If it is a 3.0 liter it runs off of the timing belt and is harder so it will take longer. If it is the 3.0 I would have the timing belt changed while I was in their

  • Can a bad water pump make a car stall?

My car has been stalling when I slow down, like at lights or to park.

I know the water pump needs changing for a different symptom I'm having.

Is it possible the water pump is also causing my stalling problem?
Can a bad water pump make a car stall?
    Most likely yes.
Can a bad water pump make a car stall?
I don't think so if you have a water pump problem the only way for it to maybe even stall the car is if the crank that the belt it on is seizing up. Is it making any screeching sounds? check the wear on the belts.. That is the only possible explanation of a stall relating to a water pump.

Usually if you have a water pump issue the vehicle will overheat.

Usually a stall could be anything could be bad plugs, wires etc

    Could be a transmission problem.

Could be something with the idle.

    It could be anything.
Definitely not your water pump if it bursts would only let your radiator over heat, you would be able to see it under your temperature gauge. There could be many answers to why your car would be stalling, if its standard or manual the car's idle could be really low and you would hear the car fighting to stay on when you slow down. If its automatic it could be your car that needs a very good tune up.
why keep driving the car with a bad water pump? your just going to blow it up then you'll be walking and then be asking us why your feet hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Most likely, No.
